Global consumption of booming rosé wine

For over 20 years, global consumption of quiet pink wines(1) is constantly increasing, and for example increased from 10% from 2017 to 2018. While the global wine market (red, white and rosé included) does not evolve, rosé gains significant market share.

Historically, rosé consumption was rather anchored in Western Europe, and rosé is a wine that is mainly consumed in its country of production. However, this market is rapidly international.

 

Global production of rising rosé

Between 2002 and 2018, global consumption of rosé jumped 40 %. Following this consumption increase, the production of global rosé also increases, until reaching a record of 26.4 million hectoliters in 2018. At this point, demand even surpasses production!

Today, France, the United States and Spain produce 64% of global rosé wine. In recent years, however, we have seen new wine -producing countries have increased production of rosé, such as Chile, South Africa, Argentina, or certain countries in Central Europe.

 

France, the first producer and consumer country of rosé wine in the world

France is the first country producing rosé wine in the world, and also its first consumer country, ahead of the United States.

According to the 2020 report of the World Rosé Observatory based on 2018 data, France represents more than a quarter of world production, with 7.5 million hectoliters on world production of 26.4 million.

It consumes 8.7 million hectoliters of rosé a year, or 36% of world consumption!


Rosé wine consumption trend in France

As we know, France is the world's leading consumer country in rosé. This consumption follows the global trend and gradually increases (increase of 53% in 15 years in France). Today, it represents about a third of the wines consumed (white, red and rosé combined), three times more than thirty years ago.

Several elements explain this upward trend:

  • The quality of rosy wines that increases over time
  • Change in consumption habits.

As a result, rosé is essential and makes an increasingly important place in today's society. He seduces a younger and younger audience than before, looking for immediate and accessible pleasure. This attractiveness is reinforced by the fact that rosé agrees with various and varied dishes.

The aesthetics of this wine, its visual appearance, and the design of the bottle, its label, the intensity of its color and its transparency, also play an important role in the attractiveness of this “nectar” with the young generation.

The production of rosé wine in Provence

The first region in France producing AOC rosé wines is Provence.

Indeed, the Rosé de Provence represents 38% of the production of AOC rosé wines in France.

With an area of ​​27,221 ha and more than 165 million equivalent bottles produced in 2018, the place of "pink Provence wines" worldwide is 4.2% in production volume and 12.6% in the value of world exchanges.

They are positioned as a market leader thanks to the adaptability of producers and new consumption methods.
